I visited a friend this morning to personally greet him on his birthday. Since it was early, he was just about getting ready to start his day. I was probably among his first visitors.
As usual we spoke about history. He showed me some of his book collections. Some are almost a hundred years old, like this small book of poems by Palma, the man who wrote the lyrics of our original anthem – noticealbe are the notes and dedication (in Spanish) on some of its page. He expressed his desire to have them republished in their original. Particularly the poems because of its literary value. I have never met a man so passionate about the Spanish language. He remains the foremost defender of this Filipino language.
I found out that he made recent trips in Cebu and Iloilo. It was nice hearing that he had a great time with these excursions. The traveling provided respite from the difficult issues that their family is presently facing. Traveling indeed is a gift in life – especially to those who have an “eye” for our beautiful Filipino history.
